South China Sea Disputes

Abstract:

The South China Sea disputes involve multiple countries with overlapping territorial claims in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. Key claimants include China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan. The area is rich in natural resources and vital for global shipping routes. Tensions have escalated due to China’s extensive territorial claims and its construction of artificial islands and military installations. The disputes have significant implications for regional security, international law, and US-China relations. Efforts to resolve the conflicts through diplomatic negotiations and international legal rulings, such as the 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling, have seen limited success. The South China Sea remains a flashpoint for potential conflict and a test for international maritime governance.
